Zinc for Acne: The Clean Beauty Gals’ Guide

Is zinc a treatment you should look into when you’re experiencing acne? This is a question that Sara, Michelle, and Jessica at Clean Beauty Gals answered in their comprehensive guide on zinc for acne. I’m happy to say that I’m one of the experts they chose as references in writing the guide. Thank you, Clean Beauty Gals. It was a pleasure sharing skincare knowledge with you.

Is zinc for acne an effective treatment?

As I mentioned in the guide, zinc benefits the entire body. To quote: “Zinc is essential for many body functions, including our ability to hear and taste, sperm production, sexual development, immune function, and wound healing.” But what about acne? How does zinc help your skin fight off this tricky skin issue? Zinc has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. Since acne is usually caused by inflammation and bacterial infection, zinc pretty much cancels it out. How do you use zinc for your acne? There’s no one-size-fits-all treatment for any skin or health condition. If you’re experiencing acne, you have to see your doctor first to know what type of acne you have. Based on their findings, your doctor will prescribe the right treatment for your skin. For hormonal acne, you may need topical products containing zinc. For the more serious and painful cystic acne, you may have to take oral zinc supplements in addition to topical skincare.

Don’t forget to eat zinc-rich foods.

Of course, when using zinc for acne, you should never forget to include zinc-rich foods in your diet. As a nutritionist, I have observed that people on a western diet don’t usually experience a severe zinc deficiency. However, it’s also true that people who have acne typically have lower levels of zinc compared to healthier people on the same diet. The thing with zinc is the human body doesn’t produce this nutrient on its own. The body doesn’t store it for long, either. So if you want to take advantage of zinc’s health benefits, you have to eat zinc-rich foods and, if needed, take oral zinc supplements. Examples of foods rich in zinc are: Soy – tofu and tempeh Whole grains – oatmeal, wheat, quinoa Legumes – chickpeas, lentils, beans Seeds – pumpkin seeds, hemp seeds, chia seeds Nuts – walnuts, cashews Again, thank you very much, Clean Beauty Gals, for including me among your references.  Learn how to use zinc and other essential nutrients effectively in your diet.
